Cold Sunset in the Big Hole Valley

by Editor on December 10, 2009

A cold winter's sunset in Montana's Big Hole Valley.

I took this picture as the sun was setting in the Big Hole.  Temperatures were plummeting – already 15 below zero – which made for a mighty cold hike to the top of this little rise.

I like the old fence line leading off to the edge of the hill… the fun thing about black and white treatments is that they force the viewer to look for more in the image.  Texture.  Shadow.  Dimension.  The texture of the wooden fence draws the eye to the setting sun and to the mountains.  The air was cold that the light was very cold and stark – another reason why the black and white works for this image.
