Dressage Moments

Dressage, the classical art of “training” both horse and rider, has fascinated riders for centuries.  Horse and rider both train endlessly, preparing to perform a memorized test that lasts anywhere from four to nine minutes.  Every movement, every motion of the team is judged.  Hold your right hand up an inch higher than the left?  You’ll find points taken off the final score.  Did your horse not perform a movement as thoroughly as he could have?  Watch more points disappear off the final score.  Overall, the discipline is endlessly demanding and exceedingly difficult – perfect for the rider who seeks challenge.

This image is one of my dressage favorites.  The horse is concentrating; the tautness of his mouth around the bit shows that he is feeling the rider’s hands via the reins.  His eyes are large and soft, and his ears are swiveled back, listening for the next instructions.  The pair’s turnout is immaculate – orderly braids, shining coat, fresh white breeches, and gleaming boots.
