Water on the Greenbelt

by Fire Girl Jess on March 26, 2012

Austin is actually green.  I never thought I’d see it.

A few rather torrential rainstorms have brought several inches of the rain to the area over the past few months, and central Texas is abloom.

I wandered down to the Barton Creek Greenbelt a few days ago with the camera, wanting to check out the rumors of a “river” flowing through the area.  I often climb in the area and, aside from a spilled water bottle, had yet to see any measurable water in certain parts of the greenbelt.

Water flowing through what is usually a dry creek bed. Barton Creek Greenbelt, Austin, Texas.

But, low and behold, there was water.  And actually a fair amount of it.  Flowers were blooming, cardinals were flying, and kayakers were zipping by the belay shelf at one of the rock walls.

I’m headed down again tonight, dry bag and camera in hand, to wade a bit and see what I can find.

I’ve lived in Austin for a while and there’s usually water in the creek during the winter and spring. Lots of good swimming holes, although rarely enough water to tube or canoe for very far. Spring is great for the wildflowers.

Good to know, John! Last spring was my only other one here in Austin and we spent a lot of time climbing the greenbelt with no water in sight save for what we carried in with us.

It’s nice to see it so green!
