Where Things Happen on a Big Scale

“I’m not sure what I’ll do, but — well, I want to go places and see people. I want my mind to grow. I want to live where things happen on a big scale.” – F. Scott Fitzgerald.

In the end, it’s all about people, and place, and the big spaces in the far-off corners of the world. This image, made last spring in French Polynesia, was one of the candid moments I love so much to capture. We’d been wading the flats all day; everyone hot, tired, and slightly euphoric in that giddy way you get when you’re some place incredible and everything seems a bit surreal. It was a couple days in, and while the locals still weren’t quite sure what to think of these visitors who caught fish only to let them go, the walls were crumbling quickly. These are the moments when all the dots connect, and it turned into a hell of a week. The shot is rough, and a little ragged, but it’s how we were feeling at the moment — and despite all the nicely posed, planned images in the world, there’s no substitute for that rawness.

I’m in Texas for the rest of the month on varying assignments; looking forward to seeing some old friends and clients (often on in the same) and making new connections.
