This morning dawned snowy and breezy here in Bozeman. After freezing rain throughout the night, we now have a cover of fluffy white spring snow to make the roads quite interesting. Spring in the mountains – one moment it will be in the fifties and sunny; an hour later snowstorms will be blowing across the valley. No doubt by tomorrow we’ll see some sun and this most recent snow will have melted off.
Snowpack in much of the state is at 50-70% of normal. Although everyone is ready for gorgeous weather, most realize that we need to put some serious snow away in the mountains. Low snowpack results all too often in the rivers running too low and, therefore, too hot to fish midway through the season. Let me tell you firsthand, that makes for cranky anglers! Pending spring rains, low snowpack also severely increases the chances for wildfires in the backcountry.
So chin up and enjoy the snow… come July we’ll all be glad for these storms!
