Gear Spot: Voltaic Solar Gets Creative

I tend to be a minimalist when it comes to gear, but facing several upcoming assignments I’m having to beef up the camera kit.  A key item on the shopping list: a solar array.

Thanks to a informative discussion on Lightstalkers, I’ve just discovered the Voltaic and have spent the last hour poking around their site and researching their gear.

It looks promising.

These guys have gotten creative – mounting solar panels on backpacks and shoulder bags, offering a low-imprint way to charge electronics on the go.  On the homepage of the site they even show a small solar cell mounted on the back of a road bike.  How creative is that?

While I’m still not sure this is the gear I need for an expedition, I had to share.  Creative ideas always catch my eye and make me smile.  Nice to see a company thinking outside of the lines.

Side note: Apologies for the blog being “off the air” for several hours yesterday.  My tech guys have informed me that the server was experiencing large denial of service attacks.  Everything is up and running again and I’ll be watching the situation.
