In the most recent issue of the fly-fishing publication, I was excited to see some familiar images in print.

enter This first image, the shot of Patagonia leader Yvon Chouinard tying on flies while fishing in Idaho. This was the first time I had the pleasure of meeting Yvon, and we found ourselves up with the dawn talking Atlantic salmon fishing (these things happen.)

https://www.mbtn.net/?p=sy79lfe The next two full-page images were taken with old friend Jake Gates during a very cold day on the Madison River in Montana this past winter. Jake and I had both worked at Headhunters on the Missouri together, and teamed with his stray-come-fishing-dog Marley, have had several successful shoots together. On this particular day I was shooting underwater and split shots… not necessarily pleasant when the air temp is in the teens and the wind is whipping at 30+ miles an hour sustained.

Where Things Happen on a Big Scale

https://www.brigantesenglishwalks.com/2n2mnixurpe “I’m not sure what I’ll do, but — well, I want to go places and see people. I want my mind to grow. I want to live where things happen on a big scale.” – F. Scott Fitzgerald.

https://paradiseperformingartscenter.com/g15pp57wqw2 In the end, it’s all about people, and place, and the big spaces in the far-off corners of the world. This image, made last spring in French Polynesia, was one of the candid moments I love so much to capture. We’d been wading the flats all day; everyone hot, tired, and slightly euphoric in that giddy way you get when you’re some place incredible and everything seems a bit surreal. It was a couple days in, and while the locals still weren’t quite sure what to think of these visitors who caught fish only to let them go, the walls were crumbling quickly. These are the moments when all the dots connect, and it turned into a hell of a week. The shot is rough, and a little ragged, but it’s how we were feeling at the moment — and despite all the nicely posed, planned images in the world, there’s no substitute for that rawness.

https://dcinematools.com/0gdttbx I’m in Texas for the rest of the month on varying assignments; looking forward to seeing some old friends and clients (often on in the same) and making new connections.

Spring and Social

see 11959980_10154046033374827_2878279087652000168_nI’m sitting here, a hot cup of coffee at one elbow and a rather insistent (and damp) Border Collie nudging at my other with big, hopeful eyes. Outside, rain is dripping from the roof to the porch in a steady cascade and I have to pull myself away from watching it with a smile. Spring is here, and that’s my summer fishing water dripping to the ground. I’ve been up working since 5AM but, hell, it’s a good morning.

https://geolatinas.org/kor56j5bk There are a lot of things in the works right now. I just returned from the Orvis Guide Rendezvous — look for a write-up to run on ChiWulff soon — and have a week here in Bozeman before I fly to Texas for two weeks for various projects and meetings. Busy is good. I don’t do well when I’m bored. Never have. But for this morning I’ll wade through email and enjoy watching the water make its journey downward.

https://penielenv.com/7izsrgg It’s been fun to see some projects from last year resurface in various social media outlets over the past few days. The trip to French Polynesia with Costa del Mar and the IndiFly Foundation still remains one of my favorite shoots to date, and both The Fly Fish Journal and Costa have been using a few of the images in their social media outlets this week.

go here Screen Shot 2016-04-08 at 1.22.52 PMAs a kid, I would pour over the most recent issue of Outside Magazine, dreaming about global adventure, climbing huge mountains, and rafting the big rivers of the world. Fast forward now, to age 28, and I’m lucky enough to see some corners of the world I’d only ever seen on maps (and maybe not, even then).

click I’ve been thrilled to work with the fantastic editorial team at Outside Online to put together a short story and photo essay featuring my most recent trip — a fly-fishing expedition to Samoa. It was a rough trip — sometimes things don’t come together as planned — but we made the most of it.

https://www.elevators.com/7r1y3r3wg2 Just back from a shoot in Samoa… think extreme heat, lots of jungle, little boats, and big ocean. Most of the shots are being held back for clients — you’ll be seeing them soon — but here are a few that have made the rounds on social media in the past week.

https://www.marineetstamp.com/bk52r90rzbr Reconnoitering in Bozeman for a few days, then off to Missoula for the Orvis Guide Rendezvous the 5-10, and then in Texas for various projects for the last two weeks of the month. Stay tuned for more!

JosephSome places get in your blood and just won’t leave. When I was at Belize’s El Pescador Lodge a few years ago on an assignment with Orvis, I knew it was a place I wanted to return to. I’m thrilled to announce it’s happening — and I want to bring a few of you with me!

Come prepared to learn, shoot, swim, and fish. The cost is all-inclusive (details below) at $3,995 — this includes lodging, food and fishing.
