Little Escapes

Sometimes it’s easy to get dragged down into the drudgery of day-to-day living.  I know I do it.  Get up, go the gym, work on the computer, go to work, come home, work on the computer some more, go to sleep.  Wake the next day and do it all over again.  Many people get so comfortable, so scheduled, in their day-to-day that they operate without really thinking.  They miss a lot.

Time to get uncomfortable.  Time to mix it up.

When you really think on it, looking back you don’t remember the daily slog.  You remember special little moments, little seconds or minutes of brilliance and laughter.  Typically those memories don’t just happen.  You have to make a conscious effort to mix things up a little, to break the daily pattern.  Go for a walk, go hike, go fish, go out to dinner with friends.  It’s really not that hard… it just takes a conscious effort.

This picture, taken last summer up one of our local canyons, was the result of one such trip.  The week at work had been rough and I felt the need to get out of town and away from people for a while.  Ran home, grabbed the camera gear and a protein bar and headed up into the mountains.  I spent hours bumping up and down logging roads, wading in streams, and just enjoying being away from it all.  Ironically, some of my best mountain pictures came from that night.  I came back into town feeling refreshed, relaxed, and unaccountably cheery.

So you see, it doesn’t take a lot.  Just break the pattern a little.  You’ll find the rewards are so worth the effort.
