Perspective

Perspective has such a great amount to do with photography.  I am not talking about getting a certain “view” within the image, although that certainly is of great importance as well.  I am talking about the perspective that a potential viewer brings to the image.  Take this image of international show jumping rider Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum on her mount Shutterfly.  Someone well versed in the equestrian world will likely recognize both Meredith and Shutterfly.  They may even recognize that the image was taken in the International Ring at Spruce Meadows in Calgary.  The equestrian viewer will look at the image from a technical standpoint, taking in the motion of both horse and rider, the rider’s position, equipment, and even the condition of her mount.  A viewer not well versed in the equestrian world will likely look at the image and think “Oh what a pretty horse… such a beautiful color.”

This holds true for all photography, especially sports or technical work.  That’s really the beauty of images – each individual person will see something new in the picture, be drawn to a different aspect.  Relate to it in a completely different way.  And that is also much of the challenge in photography – to capture an image that everyone can relate to, that makes viewers stop and think and wonder.
