Taking a Break on the Madison

by Editor on March 29, 2010

Anglers brave a windy spring day on the Madison River.

Some days you just need to get out of town.  Escape the daily routine.  See some sun.  Stretch your legs.  Explore.

Yesterday was one of those days.  I filled up the gas tank and headed over to the lower Madison River near Bear Trap Canyon.  Not exactly new territory but it proved to be a nice diversion.  A storm front was moving into the area, making for a rather challenging day for the fishermen out on the water.  (Saw lots of unhappy looking guided trips… and nearly everyone was wearing some form of warm parka.)  Regardless of the wind, however, an impressive midge hatch was coming off wherever there was some wind protection.

The barest hint of green was appearing on the slopes and along the roadways.  We are heading into a chilly, wet week – hopefully once things dry out and the sun reappears we will see some real spring green!
