Show Season Approaches…

by Editor on April 2, 2010

Spring has spring, the grass has riz…

Across the northern hemisphere snow and ice are receding, leaving in their place green grass and the beginning of spring buds.  April is here, bringing with it the “real” start of spring in many people’s minds.  For most it means fresh flowers, gardening, playing outside and mowing the lawn.

Equestrians, however, are a breed apart.

They are easy to spot this time of year – just look for the people covered in a mix of barnyard mud, the potent scent of fly spray, and a mass horse hair their equine has recently shed and oh-so-kindly passed onto whatever static-y surface may be nearby.  I remember multiple mornings pulling clean clothes out of my closet only to find them covered in horsehair that somehow survived the latest washing.  Those fortunate equestrians sans horsehair (or covered only in short little hairs) would be the ones who clipped their horses during the winter.  Translation: they are most likely performance horse riders who needed to keep their horses in top shape during the winter season.

For equestrians spring means the start of the main show season – time to start taking conditioning seriously, time to brush up on their technique over fences, time to pull out dressage tests and begin memorizing.  An exciting summer lies ahead and advance preparation is the key to success!

Best of luck in the coming season, riders.  I’ll see you at the show!
