Montana Fishing Life

by Editor on April 7, 2010

It’s no secret that Montana is a fishing state.  Some of the best fly fishing waters in the world reside within the state lines and anglers from all over the world often make the trek to visit the great waters.  Often while out on the river you will encounter fishermen from across the world – it’s like a cultural melting pot right on the water.  These anglers are fairly easy to spot in town as well, however.  Just look for the rental car, brand new Simms gear, and fancy shoes.

Trout madness is not limited to visitors.  Many locals live and breathe river life and fishing (and many make their living off the fishing industry).  These fellows go around in dirty trucks, Tevas, and shredded Simms gear that, although looking a bit worse for the wear, is still surprisingly functional.  They often have a quiver of rods ready to go and make time for the river rain, snow, or shine.  A jumble of fly fishing-related stickers cover their truck, proclaiming to the world that the occupant has been bitten by the fishing bug.

As we approach spring up here in Montana, more and more anglers are preparing for the season.  Those who didn’t fish through the winter are airing out the waders and boots, pumping up the raft, and readying the gear.  Those who did brave the cold are rejoicing in the warmer temperatures and thawing out frozen limbs.  The sun’s shining – time to get on the water!
