go to link Michael Kamber, an award-winning photojournalist currently attached to the Baghdad Bureau of the New York Times, is a well respected voice in the journalism / photojournalism industry. In June of 2007, Michael put together a compilation of advice for young photographers. His notes went far and above the traditional “go to school and spend four years learning how to take great images.” In fact, Kamber himself dropped out of school after a year and continued to work as a teaching aid in photojournalism courses. To quote, “In over 20 years, I have never been asked for my degree; in the world of photojournalism, your portfolio is your degree.” This was of particular hope to me as my own non-traditional education is often questioned.

Do your homework – research and explore before you even hit the location. Promote yourself. He offers advice on equipment, technique, even photo books and movies that are a must-view.

I did that with Michael Kamber’s piece. Young photographer or not, established photographer or not, odds are you can – and will – take something home from this piece.
