Oversaturation

Oversaturation makes this scene from Austin's Congress Avenue look like something surreal.

Typically I like to let the colors I shoot stand on their own.  Properly shot images should be rich and full of interesting color.  But sometimes it can be fun to get a little creative.  I recently shot a feature essay for Big Sky Journal on the Montana Shakespeare in the Parks troupe where I desaturated all of the images and only allowed a bit of color to show through.  The effect was to draw the eye more to the objects in the frame – actors, set pieces, what have you – than allow the colorful costumes to have all the attention.

And I seem to be trending the other way with the image series I shot in downtown Austin last week.  Oversaturating the colors, creating an almost “comic book” effect, adds life and depth to buildings and still life.  One starts to wonder – was the sky really that blue?  Was that building really painted in that shade?  As I said on Monday, “city” photography is still something I am very new to and this is a way to add my spin on it.

Yes, there is no substitute for a well-shot image in the first place.  But why not have a little fun now and then?
