Fire Girl in American Angler

by Fire Girl Jess on December 20, 2010

A sub-zero winter dawn on southwest Montana's Gallatin River.

I’ve been on the road and out of pocket, but was thrilled when Kris Kumlien of Montana Troutfitters in Bozeman sent me an email last week informing my Gallatin winter fly fishing article had come out in American Angler.  Kris was a valuable source for me on this article and the email provided a much-needed boost during a week of big decisions and high pressure.

The article talks about the “lost season” fly fishing southwest Montana’s Gallatin River.  People come from across the globe to fish the Gallatin during the traditional spring, summer, and fall seasons, but the water is almost strictly a local’s river during the short, cold winter days.

Something about fly fishing in sub-zero temperatures tends to keep the tourists away.

Personally, I invest in a good pair of Smartwool socks and those magic little heating packets for hands and feet.  But whatever.

The article was fun to write, especially since I had just moved down to Texas when it was assigned.  It made me very nostalgic for the mountains and rivers of home…

Due to travels and the unexpected absence of American Angler in this part of Austin (heresy!) I have yet to actually lay eyes on the article.  Looking forward to reading it – it’s always a thrill to see some of my work in print.
