Changing Pace

by Fire Girl Jess on January 6, 2011

A quiet moment in the crowded International Ring warmup at Spruce Meadows, Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Apologies for the spotty posts this week.  On New Year’s Day I landed in Colorado and have been running since then.  The majority of my gear arrived late last night / this morning and I have been unpacking household goods that have been packed for nearly a year as I’ve traveled about.

It’s like Christmas all over again.

There have been a plethora of changes this week.  New town, new job (barn manager / trainer at Legacy Hill Farm), new living quarters, new altitude to get used to, new people to meet, new places to explore.  No doubt, though, the largest change for me has been the change of pace.

Over the past year I’ve been basically living out of suitcase, planning only for the next job – the next photo shoot, the next article to write.  Extraordinarily productive but hard on the body and soul.  It’s been very hard this past week to wind down a bit – focus on the here and now… walking a young horse out to pasture, driving the tractor down the stall row, bandaging cuts on impatient horses.  The change of pace has been extraordinary, and while it was expected, I am surprised by the difficulty I’ve had re-adjusting.  At any rate, I’m staying very busy, the way I like to.

At this point you are likely wondering what on earth this tangent has to do with photography.  It’s simple, really.  When you slow down and really look, whole new worlds open up.  Something that you normally would have bypassed becomes a part of a fascinating photograph.  You get creative.

That said, the new job is incredible and I hope to haul the camera out soon and start shooting.  My gear’s been lonely over the past few weeks and was hauled out today for a solid cleaning.  Just handling camera gear makes me itchy to shoot!
