Traveling Light

Dry Fly Media's mobile office on the Madison River.

During my time in Austin I’ve been impressed – not favorably – by the staunch materialism displayed by most locals.  Status is the most important thing… shiny black Escalades abound and whoever is wearing the most expensive shoes wins the day.

I don’t understand it.

In Bozeman, “cool” was the dirtiest Subaru on the block.  The oldest Patagonia jacket that was still wearable.

People actually got out and did things.

I think that’s what I miss the most about the West.

At any rate, I am charging camera gear and packing up again for another busy spurt.  I am working at a ShelterBox leadership training this weekend here in Texas – I get to play a photojournalist on assignment in a third world country.  Sounds promising, at any rate.  First time to tent camp in Texas.

Back to Austin on Sunday to work and say hi to family on Mother’s Day and then I sprint down to Corpus Christi for some sailing training on Monday.  Back to Austin Monday night.

What can I say, it’s never boring.
