Summer in Texas

by Fire Girl Jess on July 11, 2011

Summer in Texas has proved interesting.  It’s hot… insanely hot.  What I would give right now for a cool day in the forties with rain and fog.

Fly fishing on Texas' Guadalupe River.

Despite the hot temperatures, you’ve got to get out and recreate.  While most of the population here seems strangely content to sit on their couches and watch the latest television episode, some of us are not wired that way.  One hundred degrees or not, sometimes you just need some time out of doors.

Hiking has changed – I just got back from a short hike this morning.  Instead of keeping an eye out for grizzlies and wolves I now watch for snakes and runaway dogs.  Fly fishing?  It’s a completely different game here, as evidenced by this image from a photo shoot on the Guadalupe River two weeks ago.  Not a trout to be seen, and though the locals argue that Fish & Game stocks the river with trout in the fall, it is not the same.  Trout with their fins worn down from growing up in a concrete bunker are depressing.

I’ve been introduced to a new outdoor pursuit here in Texas – rock climbing.  I’ve been tagging along with some friends for pictures and hope to give it a try very soon, shoulder permitting.  There is a huge appeal to a sport that can be taken with you regardless of where you are in the world.

The point being – there is a lesson to be learned here.  No matter where you are, outdoor time is critical.  In the past eighteen months I’ve gone from spending an evening in a sub-zero ditch in Montana during the middle of a snowstorm to hiking through a dried-up river bottom in south Texas looking for crawfish.  There is opportunity no matter where you are.  And it’s free – just get outside.

It’s all an adventure.
