The Mammoth Residents Are Pretty Mellow…

by Editor on November 4, 2009

A friend and I made the trip over to the east side of Yellowstone a few days ago.  With the rest of the Park closed, the roads were blissfully quiet and traffic was nearly non-existent.  The worst road jam of the trip occurred when we were caught in a heard of bison moving up a canyon with very limited passing room!

Oh, well, that’s life in Yellowstone.

Mammoth Hot Springs was quiet, snow slowly melting off in the afternoon light.  The only denizens we saw were the typical herds of elk munching on lawns and sleeping in the warm sunshine.  They all looked fat and happy, and their coats were in unusually good shape for this time of year.  A good selection of cows, yearlings, and several satellite bulls were visible – no doubt the “he” bulls were not too far away.

hey firegirl, just caught up with a couple of your images, but wanted to tell you i love the totally alive
and pulsing site…(since my niece loves ponies…and last rode them and horses in idaho — my crazy bro’s
daughter, she will love it when i forward her your site, but thats besides the point as re horses…which
always fall off of, or they ride into trees as i obviously can not read them….da) love your lines about running
into BISSONS, i still remember an old buddie of mine photographer michael smith (fine arts da da da) who i first
met on my first day at yosemite with a new man in my life after marriage…and he showed me his fotos, and
i was like oh! so thats what they do with an 8×10 in the west…dont laugh, but on my first day in that nat.
park (must redo that trip on MY OWN!) I SAW THIS GIANT SNAKE EDGING UP TOWARDS ME, as i was trying to
focus on the huge waterfall…so i had this delayed reaction and a little voice said: RUTH THIS AINT A FUCKING
POSTCARD RUN FOR YOUR LIFE…of course no one believed i really saw a giant snake, and my boyfriend a
weathered teacher at the ansel adams workshops (1975, girl!) said: ‘ruth, you probably saw a cockaroach’ so
I KNEW he wont be the next forever man in my life…but hey, better bissons than a knee deep snow storm
(yeah, i do know about that one from my one and only wilderness trip in the high sierras with lightening going
thru us, and i swore i should have been in the israeli army FIRST! BUT I SURVIVED THAT ONE, and hey, moved
on with fotos dear to my heart and soul, and still learning…firegirl you are younger than my hollywood player
son: ilan, and he will be amused to hear how i made it to lightstalkers…LOVE YOUR SITE, STAY IN TOUCH!RUTH
