Quote of the Week: Go to the Edge

by Editor on April 30, 2010

“I think the best pictures are often on the edges of any situation, I don’t find photographing the situation nearly as interesting as photographing the edges.”

-William Albert Allard, “The Photographic Essay”

Apologies for the short post today – it’s already shaping up to be a rather insane day so this is a quickie.  There’s a long story behind the above picture, but suffice to say that I fully agree with the above quote.  Pictures taken in the midst of this crime scene were a little too stark and bare in the darkness (3AM) but when I backed off and played with the lights from the trucks things came together.  The intentional blurriness adds to the “midnight” effect and draws the viewer in.

Never be afraid to step back a re-evaluate the setting.  Sometimes you’ll be surprised at what you find.
