Rain, Rain, Go Away…

Members of the Montana Shakespeare in the Parks acting troupe wait out the rain.Locals know that the Gallatin Valley had weathered more than its fair share of inclement weather this past spring.  A blizzard on the first official day of spring.  Rain every day for a week.  It would seem that our weather pattern is finally turning around for the better with a run of 80-degree days in the forecast.  Last night at Montana Shakespeare in the Parks’ performance at the MSU Grove, things got a bit… damp.

Rain, small hail, and wind hit in earnest about thirty minutes before the scheduled 8:00 performance.  The cast and crew hurriedly tarped the stage, electronics, and lighting boom, hustling in the blustery weather.  They obviously had a plan worked out well in advance – within minutes the stage was thoroughly covered and ready to weather the storm.

Spectators continued to show up throughout the worst of the storm, decked head-to-toe in ponchos, parks, and a wide variety of rain gear.  The community’s love for the acting troupe was shown in the turnout on a rainy night… people were more than willing to get a little wet to see their favorite Shakespearean actors ply their craft.  In the end, however, after a careful check on the forecast, troupe manager Mark Kuntz called the show.  The possibility of drowning both the set and the sophisticated electronics was all too real and radar showed more weather was on the way.

Never fear, fans of Shakespeare.  Montana Shakespeare in the Parks’ season is just beginning – and the troupe will be in Bozeman at the Montana State University grove through July 3 before hitting the road across the state.  After all, the show must go on!
