First full day back in Montana. I met up with the Dry Fly Media team in Austin the night of the 10th. We left at 0500 on the 11th and drove straight through, arriving in Bozeman at about 1200 on the 12th. We were all rather bleary-eyed after the trip but feel like new beings after spending today on the Gallatin.
I’m working as the still photographer for Dry Fly as they film their ‘Rivers In Motion’ video series and am also working on a few stories of my own. It is amazing to be back in the river country of Montana; it does not feel like I have been gone for three months. Bozeman feels like home. I found myself planning to head back to my apartment today…
It was a classic fall day on the Gallatin. The leaves are just beginning to turn, the river is low. Dawn and dusk were brisk and cool but we saw temperatures as high as 73 in the upper meadows of the river.
Filming along a section of the canyon run made famous in the film ‘A River Runs Through It’ Jake and I had the adrenaline rush of the day. A close encounter with a young black bear – thankfully momma was nowhere to be seen – at a close distance of seven feet. The adrenaline made for an unbeatable mid-day boost.
We are staging out of the C’Mon Inn here in Bozeman tonight to charge equipment before we hit the campsites. Plans are to start filming the Madison River tomorrow; I’m looking forward to another day on the water!
