Stiletto Stampede

by Editor on October 18, 2010

If I were back home in Montana this time of year I would have my plate full photographing fall fly fishing, the beginning of the hunting season, and fall color.  However, since I am down in Texas for the moment, I decided to get a little creative and push out of my comfort zone.

Hence Saturday’s photo shoot at the Austin Stiletto Stampede.

I don’t have much experience with high heels, having preferred Danner hiking boots and various snow boots for much of my career.  So packing up the camera kit and attending an event called a “Stiletto Stampede” was… interesting.

And a pleasant surprise.

The event helps raise awareness for breast cancer and celebrates those women who have survived the disease.  Woman (and a few questionably brave men) put on their highest heels and participate in a 100-yard dash.  Many racers showed up in full regalia, including tutus, evening gowns, and costumes.  Several well-dressed dogs also attended.

While event photography is not really my thing, it was interesting to treat the event as a street photography shoot and play with some creative portraits.    You don’t face a giggling group of high-heeled women in tutus very often.  The cause is a superb one and it was exciting to see the entire group of several hundred women (and families) gather together for a morning of support and fun.

Mysteriously I bought my first pair of stilettos yesterday.  And no, this does not signal the end of the world, as some have postulated!
