Cowboy Moments

by Fire Girl Jess on February 14, 2011

I’m stuck without internet access yet again and can only make it into town now and again to catch up at Starbucks.  When one does not have television and looses the internet connection, it’s amazing how isolated you feel!

Lacking a connection to the outside world, I’ve been trying to catch up on some other computer work.  One such long-term project is delving through the photo archives and organizing – including culling some images.

I found myself spending far too much time in the archives from the Gardiner rodeo this past spring.

It was one of those glorious Montana spring evenings – a light spring rain early on, complete with verga, then clear, warm sunlight that was perfect for shooting.  With dirty boots and a press pass I could get where I wanted to go and had an absolute blast shooting.

This particular photo did not make it into the magazine run for the event but it always catches my eye.  The clown in the foreground, watching the action and ready to work.  The cowboy in the background, taken away from the moment by something in the distance.  And the cowboy getting ready for his bronc ride, checking the rigging.  It’s quiet moments like these that really make rodeos like this one.  Sure, the event attracts tourists from all over the world, being that it takes place within spitting distance of Yellowstone.  But it also draws working cowboys and cowgirls from the area… they are there to practice their art, have a bit of fun, and hopefully to take home some prize money.

They do this for a living.
